about

Written during the year of the stat. Another very straightforward pop tune. I always wanted to write a song around the saying “Business Is Business” because I just hated that it was such a cop-out (and still is). It's a real abdication of responsibility. You might as well just say “It's not my fault - The money made me do it!”

lyrics

Verse 1
First store was founded back in 1897
By my father’s father’s pa
He’d married into it – it had become obsession
His love for her a simple ploy
They sold it all yeh from
Kitchen stoves to garters
The latest fads and the latest trends
And how you got it, how you sold it didn’t matter
The ends justify the means

Verse 2
Then Grandad Jack took it to another level
Opened stores at each end of town
He had the squatters taken out and relocated
Before he had their homes razed to the ground
He told them all yeh that
They would be looked after
And compensated for the loss
But once the stores were built promises didn’t matter
The end justifies the means

Mid
Business is business
That’s just the way it goes
If you get caught in the crossfire
Prepare for bullet holes

Verse 3
So next my daddy did some trade with out-of-towners
A bunch of snakes hiding in the grass
Who wouldn’t tell him the origin of their plunder
He didn’t wanna know and he didn’t ask
He told me son yeh there’s only
One thing that really matters
The pursuit of more of everything
Lesson you must learn is that
If it’s good for profits
The ends justify the means
Business is business
That’s the way it is
Even if it hurts some
That get in the way
Business is business
That’s the way it is
That’s the way it is.
