about

When I returned to Dublin to start working in Tower again in 2008 I began playing with a band called The Evening Watch (then known as Incommunicado) led by, my good friend and Alanalda bassist, Andrew Cooke. At one stage I asked him could I try write something for the band. I wanted to write something that would sit with the rest of his material. He had this cracker of a tune called Midsummer's Night and when I came across the drum loops by Dooley Drums they kind of reminded me of the feeling I got from that tune. The lyrics are mainly concerned with wanting to get away from the marketing-fest that is Facebook and the internet etc. It's kind of unavoidable these days. Boo hoo. I think they call it First World Problems. Anyway we never really got anywhere with it at rehearsals with The Evening Watch so I reclaimed it for meself!

lyrics

Verse 1
We want to hide
From the Evil Eye
Out of sight
Of the dollar sign
We want to live
Where marketing
Isn’t profiling
Everyone and Everything

Chorus 1
Keep your forms
And keep all your mailing lists
Keep yourself to yourself
We don’t want
Your pre-packaged lifestyle tips
Keep them all – We Make Our Own

Verse 2
We want to dance
To our homemade beats
Pots and Pans
Tell everyone you meet
Clapping of hands
And stomping of feet
Cancel your plans for once
And just be free

Chorus 2
Leave those forms
And leave all the callback lists
Leave some time for yourself
We don’t want
To give in to your rules and regs
Fuck them all – We Make Our Own
We Make Our Own, We Make Our Own, We Make Our Own,

Verse 3
We won’t need
To ask permission please
Proof of identity
Or a guarantee
We won’t be defined
By designer brands
Coz we’ll make our clothes
With our own 2 hands

Chorus 3
We’ve no forms
Or hard-to-get-on guestlists
We just want you for yourself
We just want
To escape from the pre-packed gigs
We don’t need it – We Make Our Own
We Make Our Own (x8)
